Simple Sloppy Joe

Ingredients
  

  • 1 lb 454 g lean ground Ontario pork
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 tsp 10 mL Italian seasoning
  • 1/4 tsp 1 mL hot pepper flakes
  • 1 tbsp 15 mL canola oil
  • 1 small onion diced
  • 1 green bell pepper diced
  • 1/4 tsp 1 mL salt
  • 1 can 398 mL tomato sauce
  • 1/3 cup 75 mL barbecue sauce
  • 4 kaiser buns
  • 1/2 cup 125 mL shredded mozzarella (optional)

Instructions
 

  • In a bowl, combine pork with garlic, Italian seasoning and hot pepper flakes; set aside.
  • In a large non-stick skillet, heat oil over medium heat and cook onion and pepper for about 3 minutes or until softened. Add pork mixture and salt; cook, breaking up with spatula for about 6 minutes or until no longer pink.
  • Stir in tomato sauce and barbecue sauce and bring to a simmer. Simmer, stirring often for about 8 minutes or until thickened slightly.
  • Place bottom halves of buns onto plates and top with sloppy joe mixture. Sprinkle with cheese, if using. Sandwich with top bun to serve.
